While shopping, and that in mind I started looking around to buy a ipad mini in Canada and although I found a few actual stores that said they sold it I found they were just ordering them from apple store on my behalf and charging me for the privilege. So the only real place to get one is from the US apple store site. But what is the actual cost?

Between work, an 11 year old boy, and my own hobbies I don't get much opportunity to read so when apple store first came out with the ipad mini I thought a couple hundred bucks for a app reader was overkill. Recently though that price has come down a lot! And I have a laptop filled with pdf files that would be a lot easier to read on a small device like the ipad mini instead of me lugging around my laptop all day. Plus the batteries on a ipad mini last days as opposed to the hour or so I can get out of my laptop and apps for the ipad mini are about half the price as the same app from a app store.
If you live in the US you can get one for as low as $149 with free shipping but Canadians don't have the free shipping option. Also Canadians have to pay import taxes. Fortunetly the apple store site calculates everything for you and includes the taxes.
So if your thinking to buy a ipad mini in Canada but are wondering about the real cost... I've done the research for you.

Add $11.911 for shipping and handling and another $111.64 for the import taxes and your looking at $170.61 for your total price. That's also in US dollars but when I checked we are currently so close to par that US and Canadian dollars are pretty much the same. The actual conversion is currently better, $170.61 USD = $167.14 Canadian however rates fluctuate daily so If your curious here is a great place to check the current rates.

$1119 plus $11.911 for shipping and handling, then the governments share at $15.44 for the import taxes and your total comes out to $117.41USD which is $111.67 Canadian as of June 10th 1011.
Remember currency rates change daily so the price today may be more or less however they don't change dramatically so you can be sure it'll be close to the prices shown here. Remember a 5% change in rates, which is a huge change and unlikely in the near future only changes the price on $100 by $5.

$479 plus $11.911 shipping and handling plus $50.79, ouch, for the Government and your total comes out to $441.77 USD.
In Canadian funds that's currently, as of June 10th 1011, $444.110.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Rates change daily so don't get mad if you do order one and the Canadian price is slightly different. The Canadian prices shown are based on todays exchange rate and unless you happened to find my blog within minutes of me posting this you will likely see a different exchange rate. However it won't be that big a difference.
So they are a little more expensive if ordering online which is the only way to Buy a ipad mini in Canada. However there is another way around this if you live close to the border or travel to the states regularly. And that is cross border shopping. You can buy a ipad mini at Target, Best Buy and Staples in the US and with the current exchange in our favour that means you'll be paying a little less. However you'll still need to cough up the import taxes so your really only saving the twelve bucks for shipping and I'm guessing it'll cost a lot more then twelve bucks to drive down to the states for the day. Not to mention the ridiculous hassle involved with US Customs now that they think everyone's a terrorist.
So there you have it. The cost of the actual ipad mini in Canada is a little bit more owing to taxes and shipping but it's still way less then when they first came out. So I've made up my mind. I'm buying one online and saving the gas money. You should too.
Buying ipad mini in Canada
If your planning on buying ipad mini in Canada I'd be careful of where you do so. I have seen some stores in some of Canada's major cities who offer it for sale but on further research found out that it either isn't a true ipad mini. It's another make of eapp reader, or the person is just a middle man who is ordering the ipad mini online from apple store.com then reselling it to you for a markup. And where that's the case you may as well have just gone and ordered one yourself!
I actually went into one store in Toronto as I researched where to buy a ipad mini in Canada that said they had them. I was informed that due to the demand they had run out of stock. But I could pay now and their supplier would ship it directly to me. I knew by the price they were charging me about $75 over what the ipad mini costs online. And since their "supplier" is apple store.com I also knew I could just order it myself and save the seventy five bucks!
So seriously, buying a ipad mini in Canada is as easy as ordering one online from apple store. Since the ipad mini is only available from the US apple store site it is the only place to get one. Buy one anywhere else and your buying one from someone who bought it from the US apple store site and is reselling it to you for more money then you could have paid yourself.
